Atlantic Coastal Action Program

2004 - 2005 Projects: Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation

Community Education Project
The purpose of this project is to provide community education opportunities, services, and information to BCAF stakeholders regarding watershed management activities. BCAF will achieve its stated goal through the active involvement and inclusion of various community sectors in a variety of projects. It will seek community consultation, provide training to volunteers, provide information resources, clarify and represent community interests, and establish links beyond the community to facilitate the achievement of community goals and activities.

The Lunenburg County Climate Change Challenge
Canadians are being asked to set a personal goal of reducing their GHG emissions by one tonne. It is the objective of this project to develop solutions for attaining this goal and to support national climate change initiatives. Through community level participation, BCAF will conduct Home Energy Audits and establish an Anti-Idling Campaign, with our main focus being on providing incentives and motivation for public involvement in the One Tonne Challenge.

Lunenburg Municipal Water Pollution Prevention Program
BCAF is currently partnering with NS Department of Engineering and Labour, the Town of Lunenburg, the Lunenburg Board of Trade, Environment Canada, and Clean Nova Scotia to develop and deliver a pilot municipal pollution prevention project in the Town of Lunenburg. This proposal builds on the work done in the pilot phase and centers on expanding the project into a comprehensive and sustainable community-led P2 program. The approaches used will complement the Town's new sewage treatment plant and offer both environmental and economic benefits to the community.

Development of Coastal Environment Data Products for the Environmental Prediction System (CMEPS)
BCAF's goal in the much larger Centre for Marine Environmental Prediction (CMEP) is to use environmental observation systems and advanced numerical models to describe physical, chemical, and biological changes in the marine environment. BCAF will aid in the development and validation of bio-optical data products for use in coastal observation and prediction systems in Lunenburg Bay. The project will involve volunteers in an extensive water sampling program and some sea-truthing.

Community Foundation Project
The purpose of this project is to continue to build the foundation, which supports the partnerships, skill development, and processes necessary for the community to effectively and efficiently manage its watershed issues.

Establishing Effective Stewardship Practices for the Atlantic Whitefish in the Petite Riviere Watershed, Nova Scotia
BCAF is proposing to establish a watershed stewardship board to address and implement effective habitat stewardship measures within the Petite Riviere system to ensure protection of critical habitat for the last remaining population of Atlantic whitefish in the world. This project essentially addresses three of the four broad objectives outlined in the National Recovery Strategy for the Atlantic Whitefish.

Mushamush River Restoration Project
Originally a four year restoration plan was developed by BCAF to address the efforts needed to restore and enhancement fish habitat in the Mushamush River resulting from the removal of a NS Power dam in the fall of 2000. The proposed 2004 restoration project will address the efforts outlined in Year 3 of this plan.

Mahone Bay Roseate Tern Recovery Project
A single site in Mahone Bay once supported one-third of the Endangered Canadian Roseate Tern population. This colony was abandoned in the mid-1990s, and Roseate Terns have attempted unsuccessfully to nest at several sites since. This project will provide a secure nesting site for Roseate Terns through habitat enhancement (placement of nesting shelters), predator deterrence (human presence, pyrotechnics), and public awareness (signage, public consultation, outreach).
